The History Behind Audemars Piguet

Founded in 1875 in Le Brassus, Switzerland by Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward-Auguste Piguet, the brand spent nearly a century producing traditional dress watches and complicated timepieces for a small, discerning clientele before facing an existential threat from Japanese quartz technology in the early 1970s. In response, AP's managing director commissioned designer Gerald Genta to create a steel sports watch worthy of the AP name, and Genta delivered the Royal Oak ref. 5402ST in a single evening, drawing inspiration from a deep-sea diver's helmet porthole. Unveiled at Baselworld in 1972 at 39mm, just 7mm thick, made entirely from stainless steel, and priced at 3,650 Swiss Francs, roughly four times the cost of a Rolex Submariner, it created a category that did not previously exist: the luxury sports watch. More than 50 years later, the Royal Oak remains AP's defining piece and one of the most coveted references on the secondary market.

What Makes Audemars Piguet Watches Distinct?

The Octagonal Bezel and Eight Screws. The Royal Oak's octagonal bezel with eight exposed hexagonal screws is the most copied design element in luxury watchmaking. On an authentic AP, each screw is hand-finished and perfectly aligned. The bezel integrates seamlessly into the case, creating what collectors describe as a single unified sculpture rather than separate components assembled together.

The Tapisserie Dial. Every Royal Oak dial is engine-turned using a guilloché technique on century-old pantograph machines. This process cuts a precise grid pattern into the dial surface, creating three distinct textures: Petite Tapisserie on the original Jumbo and ultra-thin references, Grande Tapisserie on modern 37mm and 41mm models, and Mega Tapisserie on the larger Offshore references. No two dials are identical.

Alternating Finishing. Every flat surface on a Royal Oak case is mirror-polished. Every beveled edge is brushed satin. These two finishes exist in deliberate contrast across the same surface, requiring hand-finishing by skilled craftspeople. It cannot be replicated by machine. An over-polished Royal Oak loses this contrast permanently, which is why unpolished case condition is so important to collectors.

The Integrated Bracelet. The Royal Oak bracelet flows directly from the case without a break. The transition from case to bracelet is continuous and precise, one of the most difficult engineering challenges in watchmaking to execute well. It is the detail that separates a genuine Royal Oak from every imitation.

Independent Ownership. Unlike Rolex, Patek Philippe, and most other major Swiss brands, Audemars Piguet remains independently owned by the founding families. This independence allows AP to make production decisions based on quality and brand integrity rather than conglomerate volume targets. AP produces approximately 50,000 watches per year, a deliberately constrained output that sustains scarcity across the entire lineup.

The Audemars Piguet Collection Explained:

Royal Oak "Jumbo" Extra-Thin (Ref. 16202 / 15202). The most direct descendant of Gerald Genta's original 1972 design. At 39mm with a slimmer profile than modern selfwinding references, the Jumbo carries the heritage, collector cachet, and the original Petite Tapisserie dial texture. The current ref. 16202 introduced the Calibre 7121 in 2022 to mark the Royal Oak's 50th anniversary. The discontinued ref. 15202ST is among the most appreciated pre-owned references in the entire collection.

Royal Oak Selfwinding 41mm (Ref. 15510 / 15500). The modern everyday Royal Oak. The 41mm case added a central seconds hand and a longer power reserve versus the Jumbo, making it more practical for daily wear. The ref. 15500ST was current production until 2022 and trades strongly on the secondary market. The 15510ST succeeded it with the new Calibre 4302 movement. Blue dials command the highest premiums across all 41mm references.

Royal Oak Offshore. Introduced in 1993 and originally nicknamed "The Beast" for its larger, more aggressive proportions, the Offshore expanded the Royal Oak concept into a sportier, bolder design category. Available in 42mm to 48mm depending on the reference, in stainless steel, titanium, rose gold, and ceramic, with chronograph and tourbillon variants. The Offshore attracted a younger collector demographic and a strong pop-culture following, driving significant pre-owned demand for earlier references.

Royal Oak Chronograph. The flyback Calibre 4401, AP's first fully in-house integrated chronograph, now powers the Royal Oak Chronograph lineup. This movement is shared with the Code 11.59 Chronograph but carries a strong premium in the Royal Oak case. Available in steel and precious metal configurations.

Code 11.59. AP's second major collection, introduced in 2019. The Code 11.59 uses a round case with a complex three-part case architecture, moving away from the Royal Oak's octagonal geometry while retaining AP's finishing standards. The collection was polarizing at launch but has developed a committed collector following. Pre-owned Code 11.59 references currently trade below Royal Oak pricing at equivalent metal configurations, representing a relative value opportunity for buyers who prioritize movement architecture over name recognition.

Royal Oak Movements: What to Know

The original Royal Oak ran on the Calibre 2121, a movement co-developed with Jaeger-LeCoultre based on the JLC 920 architecture. AP used this movement for decades and continued producing 2121-powered references until 2021, when the Calibre 7121 replaced it in the Jumbo to mark the 50th anniversary. The 7121 is fully in-house and retains the ultra-thin 3.05mm profile required for the Jumbo's slim case.

The Calibre 3120, introduced in 2003, was AP's first fully in-house movement to power the selfwinding Royal Oak. It powered the 15300ST and 15400ST references and is still found across a wide range of pre-owned inventory. The current Calibre 4302 and 4302 variants power modern 41mm selfwinding references.
