Why Watch Winders Shorten Your Service Intervals

Most collectors treat a watch winder as basic care equipment. However, these devices can potentially severely damage your watch. It will also force you to have to send your item for service much sooner than you need to. 

Service Intervals are About Running Time, not Years

Manufacturers publish service guidance in years. Rolex suggests roughly every ten years, Omega five to eight, Patek Philippe three to five. Those figures assume a normal pattern of wear: the watch is worn, set down, runs through its power reserve, and stops.

What actually wears a movement is operation. Every hour the balance oscillates, the gear train turns, pivots ride in their jewels, and the lubricants gradually break down. A watch that runs more needs service sooner. The calendar interval is a proxy for accumulated running hours under typical use, and a winder breaks the assumption behind it.

The Scary Running Hours Math

A watch on a winder runs 8,760 hours a year regardless of wrist time.

The same watch in a normal rotation, worn one or two days a week and then set down, behaves very differently. A Rolex caliber 3235 carries a 70 hour power reserve. The watch runs through its wrist time, coasts for about three days, and stops. Depending on how often it is worn, that works out to somewhere between 2,500 and 3,500 running hours a year.

A winder therefore roughly triples the wear on a rotation watch. A ten year service interval starts behaving like a three to four year interval. Nothing on the dial signals the difference. The service invoice does.

What dealers see on trade-ins

The pattern is consistent across pre-owned inventory. Watches from 2023, 2024, and early 2025 arrive with low wrist time and a history of continuous winder use, and they need a full service before they can be sold. Amplitude is down, timekeeping has drifted, and rotor bearings are sometimes already audible. These are movements that should have been years away from their first service.

Watches of the same age that sat stopped in a box between wears almost always test within spec and go directly to inventory.

The objection I already know is coming

"Watches are meant to run." Sure. They are also meant to stop. Modern synthetic lubricants do not gum up when a movement sits idle for a few weeks the way old oils did decades ago. The argument that a stopped watch is somehow at risk is a holdover from a different era of watchmaking.
