The Audemars Piguet Lineup Explained: Which Is Right for You?

The Audemars Piguet Lineup Explained: Which Is Right for You?

Royal Oak, Offshore, Jumbo, Code 11.59. The names get thrown around constantly in collector circles, and the differences between references matter a lot when you are spending serious money. Here is a straightforward breakdown of every major AP collection and what each one is actually for.

Royal Oak "Jumbo" Extra-Thin: Refs. 16202 and 15202

If you want the watch closest to what Gerald Genta drew in 1972, this is it. The Jumbo runs at 39mm with a slimmer profile than any other Royal Oak, powered by an ultra-thin movement that keeps the case under 8mm in height. The current ref. 16202 introduced the fully in-house Calibre 7121 in 2022 to mark the Royal Oak's 50th anniversary, while the discontinued 15202ST is one of the most consistently appreciated references in the entire pre-owned AP market. If heritage and collector cachet are the priority, the Jumbo is the answer.

Royal Oak Selfwinding 41mm: Refs. 15510 and 15500

This is the practical everyday Royal Oak. The jump from 39mm to 41mm brought a central seconds hand and a longer power reserve, making it a more functional daily wearer without sacrificing any of the design. The ref. 15500ST held the line until 2022 and remains one of the strongest performers on the secondary market. The 15510ST replaced it with the new Calibre 4302 movement. Across all 41mm references, blue dials command the highest premiums, and that gap has been consistent for years.

Royal Oak Offshore

Introduced in 1993 and immediately nicknamed "The Beast" for its larger proportions and more aggressive attitude, the Offshore took the Royal Oak's DNA and pushed it into full sports-watch territory. Case sizes range from 42mm to 48mm depending on the reference, with configurations in stainless steel, titanium, rose gold, and ceramic, spanning chronograph and tourbillon complications. The Offshore brought AP into pop culture, attracting a younger collector base and building strong secondary market demand across early production references that are now discontinued.

Royal Oak Chronograph

The Royal Oak Chronograph runs the Calibre 4401, AP's first fully in-house integrated flyback chronograph movement. The same calibre powers the Code 11.59 Chronograph, but in a Royal Oak case it commands a meaningful premium. Available in steel and precious metal configurations, this is the entry point for AP buyers who want a complication alongside the Royal Oak design.

Code 11.59

AP's second major collection, introduced in 2019, is the most misunderstood watch in their current catalog. The Code 11.59 moves away from the Royal Oak's octagonal geometry, using a round case with a complex three-part architecture, but it maintains AP's finishing standards throughout. It was polarizing at launch, and the collector community was divided. That division has softened considerably over time, and a committed following has developed around the collection. For pre-owned buyers, Code 11.59 references currently trade well below Royal Oak pricing at equivalent metal configurations. If you want AP's in-house movement architecture and finishing quality and are less attached to the Royal Oak name specifically, the Code 11.59 is one of the better value plays in the current market.

Jules Audemars

Named directly after co-founder Jules-Louis Audemars, this collection is AP's classical dress watch line. Round cases in rose gold, white gold, or platinum. Silvered or lacquered dials with applied indices and slender Dauphine hands. No octagonal bezel, no exposed screws, no integrated bracelet. Just traditional haute horlogerie in its purest form, built on the same technical philosophy Jules Louis Audemars brought to his attic workshop in Le Brassus in 1875.
