Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Big Pilot 43 differ from the 46mm Big Pilot?
It's the scaled-down version IWC introduced in 2021. Beyond the smaller case, it drops the date and the power reserve indicator for a clean three-hand dial, and runs Calibre 82100 instead of the 52110. At 43.8mm it fits wrists the 46mm never could, and it's still 13.6mm thick, so it has presence.
What is Pellaton winding on the Calibre 82100?
IWC's own automatic winding system, in use since 1950. A cam on the rotor moves two pawls that wind the mainspring in both directions. In the 82100, the cam and pawls are zirconium oxide ceramic, which doesn't wear, so this part of the movement never needs replacing at service. Power reserve is 60 hours.
Will the ceramic case chip?
It can, on a hard edge strike, and ceramic doesn't get polished, it gets replaced. Short of that it won't scratch or fade. The caseback and crown are titanium rather than ceramic so the threads don't wear, and the quick-release strap system means you're never prying at the lugs with a tool.
