Frequently Asked Questions
What Co-Axial movement does the Omega Planet Ocean 2200.51.00 use and how does it compare to newer Planet Ocean movements?
The 2200.51.00 uses the Calibre 2500, Omega's first-generation Co-Axial movement based on the ETA 2892 platform with George Daniels' Co-Axial escapement module integrated. It is not a fully in-house movement, which distinguishes it from the later 8500 and 8900 series found in current Planet Ocean references. The Co-Axial escapement itself is the important engineering advance regardless of generation, reducing friction in the escapement mechanism and extending service intervals compared to conventional lever escapements.
How does the original Planet Ocean 2200 generation differ from the current Planet Ocean 215 series?
The 2200 generation represents the first commercial expression of the Planet Ocean concept, introduced around 2005, before Omega had developed its fully in-house movement manufacturing capability. The current 215.30 series uses the in-house Master Chronometer calibres certified by METAS to a higher accuracy standard and with antimagnetic resistance up to 15,000 gauss. The 2200 generation trades movement modernity for a lower entry price in the pre-owned market while retaining the same 600m water resistance, Co-Axial escapement, and case architecture that defined the line.
Is 45.5mm too large for everyday wear on the Omega Planet Ocean 2200.51.00?
The 45.5mm Planet Ocean is the larger of the two original case sizes and wears as a substantial watch best suited to wrists above 18cm. The lugs are well-proportioned relative to the case diameter, which mitigates some of the visual weight, and the steel bracelet keeps the watch from feeling as heavy as comparably sized titanium or ceramic alternatives. Buyers who find the 45.5mm excessive can look at the 42mm Planet Ocean variants of the same era, which offer identical specifications in a more versatile case size.
