Frequently Asked Questions
What changed from the original 2018 Apollo 8?
The movement. The 2018 version used Calibre 1869, an older Lemania-based design. This one runs Calibre 3869, a Co-Axial Master Chronometer with a silicon balance spring and 15,000 gauss magnetic resistance. Same 44.25mm ceramic case and yellow accents, plus a sapphire crystal in place of the old hesalite.
What is the "rocket hand"?
The small seconds hand at 9 o'clock is a miniature Saturn V, machined from titanium and finished by hand. It's the detail people are paying for on this reference versus a standard Dark Side of the Moon, and it's why the "Rocket Hand" nickname stuck.
Why does the dial show the moon on both sides?
The movement bridges are laser-ablated to look like the lunar surface. The dial side is the near side, the one you see from Earth. Flip it over and the caseback shows the far side, which the Apollo 8 crew were the first humans to see in 1968.
