Frequently Asked Questions
How do you read the time on the No. 5 KAI?
The hours sit on a rotating disk. As each hour comes up, it travels along the fixed minute track at the top of the dial, so you read the hour numeral and where it points on the minute scale in one glance. It's the same principle as a wandering hours watch. Running seconds sit on a small disk at 5 o'clock.
Why does it use a Miyota base movement?
Because the satellite hour module on top is what Jiro Katayama builds himself, one at a time, in his Tokyo workshop. The Miyota 90S5 is a thin, reliable automatic that keeps the case at 7.6mm and is easy to service anywhere. Nobody buys an Otsuka Lotec for the base caliber. They buy it for the module, the case finishing, and the fact one person made it.
Why is this watch so hard to buy new?
Otsuka Lotec sells only through a lottery on its own site, and Katayama produces a few dozen watches a year across all models. Winning an allocation for the No. 5 KAI can take multiple years of entries. The pre-owned market is how most buyers outside Japan actually get one.
