The AP x Swatch Royal Pop Is Here, Why That Means Nothing for Royal Oaks
Audemars Piguet and Swatch officially unveiled the Royal Pop on May 12, 2026: a collection of eight bioceramic pocket watches drawing on the Royal Oak's iconic octagonal design language and the vibrant aesthetic of Swatch's 1980s POP line. Priced at around $400 and available exclusively at selected Swatch stores (one per person, per day), the launch triggered the same scenes of global queuing the MoonSwatch sparked in 2022. Paris, Kuala Lumpur, New York.
For collectors in the pre-owned luxury watch market, this collaboration raises an important question: what does this mean for the Royal Oak?
What the Royal Pop Actually Is
The Royal Pop is a Swiss-made pocket watch powered by a new hand-wound version of Swatch's SISTEM51 movement. the same fully automated mechanical caliber used in the Blancpain x Swatch Scuba Fifty Fathoms. It comes in Lépine and Savonnette case styles, built from Swatch's signature bioceramic material, and carries over the Royal Oak's signature eight-bolt bezel and integrated bracelet language into a format that is intentionally disruptive.
This is not a wristwatch. It is not a Royal Oak at a discount. But it is unmistakably, visually, a piece of Royal Oak DNA in $400 form, accessible to an audience that would never have touched AP before.
What the MoonSwatch Taught Us
The MoonSwatch is the most relevant precedent here, and the data tells a clear story. When Omega and Swatch launched the MoonSwatch in March 2022, secondary prices for the $260 bioceramic Speedmaster-inspired watches spiked immediately. Some references hit $1,500+ on StockX and Chrono24 within days of launch. The hype was real, the resale premium was real, and for a moment it looked like another long-term collector piece.
Then the chart took over.

As the graph above shows, MoonSwatch prices have fallen approximately 70.3% since their March 2022 peak, dropping from roughly $1,400 down to around $250 today, nearly back to retail. The correction was driven by steady Swatch restocking, the absence of artificial scarcity, and the simple reality that hype-driven demand eventually normalizes.
The Royal Pop is almost certainly going to follow the same arc. If you are buying one to flip, the window will be short. If you are buying one because you genuinely love it, the timing matters less.
What About Pre-Owned Royal Oak Prices?
The MoonSwatch did not meaningfully move Omega Speedmaster prices on the secondary market, if anything, it introduced new buyers to the Speedmaster ecosystem who eventually graduated to the real thing.
The Royal Pop brings AP's design language to an entirely new audience. Some of those buyers will remain casual. Others will research the Royal Oak 15500ST, understand what they're looking at, and enter the pre-owned market as qualified buyers with real intent. If anything, the value of the Royal Oak may increase due to the increase in supply of the cheaper Royal Pop.
There is no credible argument that a $400 pocket watch diminishes a $40,000+ Royal Oak. These products serve entirely different buyers. AP's brand equity is built on movement architecture, case finishing, and heritage.
Our Take
Watch the Royal Pop secondary market for the next 60–90 days if you are curious. Expect a peak, expect a correction. Do not make long-term financial decisions based on its trajectory.
For the Royal Oak, the collaboration is a net neutral to mildly positive, it expands awareness without diluting the product. Pre-owned 15500ST and Royal Oak Offshore pricing will be driven by the usual factors: availability, condition, reference desirability, and the broader luxury watch market, not by a pocket watch at Swatch stores.
This is not financial advice. Watch markets are unpredictable, and past price behavior. Including the MoonSwatch chart above, does not guarantee any future outcome. Every purchase decision should reflect your own research, taste, and financial situation.
